Analysis Of The Poem Rich s Diving Into The Wreck

RICH: 1. If you were asked to paraphrase what happens in the poem, what would you say? What does it mean to dive into the wreck? Taking Adrienne Rich’s â€Å"Diving into the Wreck† at face value, one may literally summarize the poem by stating that an individual, hearing stories about a wrecked ship, decided to dive down to the fabled ship alone to see it for themselves and found it. However, reading between the lines, one may also feel that the poem is more than just an adventure for the narrator, but rather a personal journey as well. At the beginning of the poem, the narrator describes hearing about the wreck and preparing to visit it alone, descending the ladder and entering the water below. However, the narrator seems to feel apprehensive and a bit fearful, referring to their scuba-suit as â€Å"body-armor† (Rich 5) and describing the growing foreboding feeling as the water gets darker. But these feelings soon vanish, for the narrator comes upon the wreck, captiva ted by the ship’s figurehead who is forever trapped at the bottom of the ocean. However, at this point in time, the narrator seems to have a sort of epiphany while engrossed by the image of the ship that is a bit difficult to describe. Tosh of IPoints says, â€Å"Reward catalogues can be tailored to include a business’s o wn product or service at a reduced price. Companies could even tailor the earning and redemption around their customers’ business needs. † Customers who know that your company is helping to build their business have a powerful incentive to buy from you. Rewards are short-term encouragements; loyalty is long-term commitment. As Lebond of P says, â€Å"If you get the right people with the constant attitude of ‘how can I make my customers even happier’ then you don’t need a reward programme. Corporate hospitality Customer events are undervalued largely because the value of them is difficult to assess. Face-to-face communications and shared experiences are very personal and the positive associations remain for a long time. Sarah Webster, director of communications at Eventia, explains, â€Å"Corporate hospitality enables suppliers to deepen their relationship with clients and to understand the motivations and constraints that influence buying decisions . † Corporate hospitality also adds value, as Rob Allen, chief executive at TRO, explains. Take the example of an accountancy firm which organises a breakfast briefing for its clients on the morning following the budget. By explaining the full implications of the Chancellor’s new financial provisions, the firm is enabling its client companies to make significant savings or profits. Lebond of P says, â€Å"Every piece of communication could potentially be the lowest common denominator in a business’s contact with its clients, so each one must be as good as possible. More business is lost by poor communications then by anything else. † Newsletters draw customers to websites where their interests can be analysed and responded to, reward programmes encourage frequent transactions, and hospitality enables personal contact. In â€Å"Wise Blood†, the Religion is treated as if it were just another materialistic thing. People want the newest trends and that can include religion also. The old â€Å"traditional† ways of religious beliefs are tested in this movie. Religion, in â€Å"Wise Blood†, is treated as if it were something people could use to get money. The main character, Hazel Motes, attempted to change that materialistic belief, but in the end he did not do it justice. He was using God to make people feel sorry for him and that would in turn make them give him money. While Hazel is preaching on a street corner, another man comes up to him. (Oly J Holy)**** This particular guy thought Hazel was just making lies up to obtain money, when in reality Hazel was preaching from what he believed. This guy gets the idea to go along with Hazel and tries to get some money out of it. When the people start listening more to this guy in the big hat and not Hazel, he gets in his car and drives off. This is yet another guy trying to make a buck off these by standards in the street. While Hazel might not have been completely right about what he was preaching, he was the only one actually doing it for the right cause. He was really saying what he believed instead of just trying to make some money. Hazel is somewhat like the character in the poem Howl. This story is about driving someone mad and that’s what Hazel ended being, mad. He drove himself crazy, so crazy that he blinded himself and wrapped wire around his body. The young guy that wanted to follow Hazel around is somewhat like the unknown character in The Invisible Man. In the story the unknown character was treated so badly by all the white men, but he kept pushing through so he could make his speech and he thought someone might really like him. The young guy in the Wise Blood was the same way. He just wanted to be accepted and to have a friend. He kept trying many different times with Hazel and with other people in the street. He ended up not having a friend in the world. In the end, Hazel did not get to finish want he started. He let the other men and the hardship of their lies get to him. He stood up for what he believed in and that still was not enough. When Hazel tried to leave the city, he was still forced to stay in the madness he had somehow created. He was forced to sit and rot in the house until he tried to leave. He was brought back and when he knew that he could not do anything more, he died.

I then went to work on my presentation and used PowerPoint and incorporated the use of flashing images and sounds to gain the attention of the service users (my audience) and also to try and make the session as least boring as I could. The biggest dilemma I faced however was that of telling the service users that the activity that they had taken their time to choose had been greatly modified if not completely disregarded. During lunch on the day before the proposed new activity was to take place I had to announce to the service users the change in structure. Many of them did not respond verbally but I could see by their facial expressions that they were extremely disappointed. I explained to them that it was to safeguard their health and safety and proposed my talk about health talk the following day, I had complete reservations about the attendance of the session. As expected, almost all of the service users did not show up, with exception of only two, Mrs. E and John. It was apparent that the service users had lost trust in me and were obviously conveying their feelings by refusal to show up. Mrs. E and John only managed to stay stationary for less than five minutes and had begun to fondle each other. The support workers had to pull them apart and I was unable to carry out the rest of my presentation. On Reflection Looking back at my research project I would not change the way in which I carried it out however I feel it would have been beneficial if I had known the residents for as long as I have known them now. There are also indications that more accurate, detailed information is provided when the researcher has spent time getting to know people and has regular contact with the participants during the research'(Cornwell, 1984). I also did not take into account how much of an impact the organizations policies were going to have on the project. I would have preferred for the project to have had a positive impact on the service users however I feel that it may have lowered their self esteem even more. Nonetheless McIver (1991) suggests that where an evaluation has explored in some depth the nature of the service individuals receive as well as the impact it has on the recipients, the task of establishing the relationships between these two sets of data is challenging but nonetheless of considerable importance to the future development of policy and provision. As services strive more and more to offer an individual service to their users this can complicate attempts to aggregate outcomes, and produce misleading results for the project as a whole. Whilst planning the project and undertaking it there are many issues that I encountered that may need reviewing and others changed completely. The National Service Framework (1999) states All mental health service users on CPA should receive care which optimises engagement however one could argue that this was not the case when the Ward manager refused an activity that offered many advantages. Furthermore The Community Care Act (1990) states that In some cases, resources should not be taken into account, for instance, if a person would be at severe physical risk if a service were not provided. Even though the service users (especially the heavier ones) may not suffer straightaway, over a period of time they could be at physical risk from not having any exercise. Moreover because research suggests that exercise eases stress and may cause a reduction in low self esteem it could possibly slow the processes of patients becoming more depressed. Discrimination against people with mental health problems is rife and extends into the health professions (Chadda, 2000) and discriminatory behaviour is conveyed by certain members of staff at the unit. The National Occupational Standards state that one of the key purposes of Mental health services is to provide equitable and non-discriminatory services, across all age groups and settings however one could argue that the senior members of staff may discriminate against Mrs. E and John because of their expression of their sexuality. It is possible that staff separate Mrs. E and John for their own benefit rather than for the benefit of the service users themselves because it seems that the more they are not allowed to interact with people of different sex it makes their exhibition of promiscuous behaviour even worse. It is apparent that the organisational structure of health and social care services has developed a culture of just do it and do not ask questions. This could be because of a number of several factors. The healthcare market has grown dramatically and this is reflected also by the many consumers. Statistics (2000) show that there has been a dramatic increase in the number of people being referred to psychiatric services since the 1940s particularly men and young people. Furthermore 65% more are being referred to psychiatric hospitals for the first time. This obviously has an impact on the healthcare sector as a whole because the Government has had to up funding over the years to cope with the demand for care services. This is in turn puts pressure on the many NHS funded hospitals and psychiatric units to keep up standards and not go over their budgets. This is reflected in the way the ward manager runs the unit and may give reason to as to why she refused the recreational activity chosen by the service users because of factors such as the funding to buy equipment, the time and effort in doing the risk assessments for each and every patient who takes part and also the allocation of staff. Care vs control is also a major issue as I found it hard to interview some patients because of the medication that they had received which made them drowsy and rarely alert. The nursing staff may sometimes give medication to the patients before the allocated time so that they dont act up or when they are being aggressive than usual. Healthcare workers need to take into account that it may be possible for the service user may be upset about something and may be lashing out just as normal people do. Traditionally, employment (or industry) relations, has been associated with the management of either collective or individual conflict in the workplace. In recent years, the focus has opened out to consider the benefits of high performance working on productivity, but also the wider social implications for individuals and their dependents. The workplace provides not only the money that we need to support ourselves and our families, but it can also provide purpose, status, and friendship, allowing people to develop new skills, both technical and social. The ability of line managers to manage employment relations on a day-to-day basis and to get the best from their staff has implications for innovation, productivity, quality and reliability, and ultimately levels of growth at a national level and our ability to compete on the global stage. With so much invested in work by managers and employees individually, employment relations have never been so important (Stellman, 1998). B). Importance for â€Å"Safety and Health† Practitioners to Understand Industrial Relations As seen above, industrial relations are an important aspect in the management of organizations. There is in turn a very strong and positive business case for the safety and health practitioners to understand all the aspects of industrial relations. This would enable all the parties involved to fully understand what is needed for each one of them. In addition, it helps understand the fact that, a happy and healthy employee is a more productive employee. In turn it enables the employer understand the repercussions of disgruntled employees. The very last thing any employer would want is a group of dissatisfied employees who might scrutiny their organization’s administration team as one that is concerned only about profits and not anything for workers well-being because this group will not be very industrious.Clear understanding of industrial relations helps the management to take care of their employees for better return in terms of productivity. Moreover, clear understanding of the industrial relations, helps in placing and maintaining of worker in a work-related setting through the adaptation and understanding of physiological and psychological capabilities of the employees. Graduation Speech: A Great Time to Be a Graduate :: Graduation Speech, Commencement Address

Ladies and Gentlemen we are assembled here this evening to celebrate the graduation of the Community College Class of 2012. With this celebration comes many distinctions, honors and legacies. This is a great time to be a graduate of Community College, because we are a group of students who are graduating with high grade point averages, leadership skills, overall talent, plus we are leaving behind much to be admired by future classes. Our class is also a very diverse and dedicated one. As if being a student alone was not a difficult task, many of our classmates hold jobs outside of school, are active in their communities as coaches, volunteers, athletes and leaders, and many have families to take care of. Our class has much to be excited about, many positive changes have come to our school because of the efforts of those in our class. We have held many amazing programs the past two years and especially this year. We have had several nationally known speakers and leaders visit our campus to inform us about local, national and international events. They have also come to our campus to see what has been going on here in Loyville and how they can use our models to aid other programs. We have had such speakers as civil rights activist Dick Gregory, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., local screen writer and producer Sherman Alexie, Gov. Gary Locke and U.S. Sen. Patty Murray. These past two years have also seen the addition in artwork here as well. Several new paintings and other hangings have been presented to the college, such as Dallas M. "Gray Eagle" Singhurst II's "Yu 'Pik fur seal mask" and the "Loyville Community College History Mural" painted by Bernie Webber. These artworks not only add to the campus but explain the history of the college and our community. There have been additions to school programs as well, including a women's soccer program, high school First Reach program designed to encourage local high school students to come to EvCC, a health and wellness series, and even a college rowing club designed to help students "catch the spirit of rowing." Members of the class of '99 and guests, I hold in my hand for you a special gift, from the classrooms of EvCC comes tonight's Top 10 List. These are the top 10 reasons to be proud to be part of the graduating class of 1999: 10.

The Biography of Andrew Johnson

Andrew Johnson was born on December 1808. He was the 17th president of the United States. Johnson had been born into extreme poverty and had no formal education. Yet with determination and hard work, he had risen rapidly through politics, to state government and on to national office. He married Eliza McCardle, who was a school-teacher and was a big part of Johnson†s education, she helped him learn how to write and do arithmetic. He had three sons and two daughters. Andrew Johnson was a democratic and had served in the Senate from 1857- 1862. In the early months of the Civil War, Johnson was forced to flee his own state to avoid arrest. When federal troops conquered Nashville, he resigned his Senate seat in March 1862 to accept President Lincoln†s appointment as military governor of Tennessee. He served as vice president for a month in 1865, and as president for the balance of Lincoln†s terms. In January 1875, Johnson won back his former Senate seat after a struggle that forced the Tennessee legislature through 56 separate ballots. Johnson took his Senate deposition before the same body that only seven years earlier had failed by a single vote to remove him from the White House on March 5, 1875. During the 19 day Senate special session, he delivered a political turmoil in Louisiana and then returned to Tennessee, where he died four months later on July 31, 1875. He suffered from a stroke. Johnson was buried on a hilltop in Greenville, wrapped in a 37 star flag with a copy of the Constitution under his head.

It’s supposed to be a humorous take on how all the biggest tech companies are organized. It might have to be updated to account for changes at Apple. When Steve Jobs was in charge, everything flowed through him. Now that he’s dead, the company is taking on a more collaborative approach, according to various reports. The latest, from Adam Satarino at Bloomberg, says Jony Ive is encouraging Apple’s software and hardware teams to collaborate, something that never happened under Jobs. Ive was given control over Apple’s software look and feel in November. Previously, he was only in charge of the look of the hardware. This new collaborative approach is causing Apple to be more deliberate than in the past, says Satarino. This could lead to delays, he says. Because this is Ive’s first crack at Apple’s software, ità ¢â‚¬â„¢s understandable that there are going to be delays. He’s spent six months on a project that normally takes a year. In the long run it will be interesting to see how this collaborative approach works. As the org chart above demonstrates, Apple was always a company with one guy making all the calls. This made product decisions easier. But it also made them slower at times. We heard from a source that Apple often faced bottlenecks because everything had to flow through Jobs. And Jobs was the kind of person who would get intensely focused on one thing, leading to him ignoring other products at the company. Former Apple employee David Sobotta told us, â€Å"If we saw Steve Jobs come into a briefing, he couldn’t talk about anything else, other than the thing he was working on †¦ He came into an enterprise sales briefing, and at the time he was working on iMovie. So, we’d be talking about home movies in the enterprise briefing.† In theory, the new organizational structure should help certain divisions make decisions more quickly. But, collaboration has its downside. Not only did he manage to become universally famous in his own lifetime, he was the first artist to successfully use mass media to further his name (and business empire). He also inspired or, in the notable case of Cubism, invented, nearly every art movement in the twentieth century. The Three Musicians (1921), pretty much summed up Cubism for Picasso. For the rest of his days, no one style could maintain a hold on Picasso. In fact, he was known to use two or more different styles, side by side, within a single painting. One notable exception is his surrealistic painting Guernica (1937), arguably one of the greatest pieces of social protest ever created. Picasso lived long and, indeed, prospered. He grew fabulously wealthy from his phenomenal output (including erotically themed ceramics), took up with younger and younger women, entertained the world with his outspoken remarks, and painted almost right up until he died at the age of 91. The population in the entire developed world is greying and Nordic countries are no exception. With the increase in longevity of people and reduced child births, the number of people above the age of 65 is rapidly increasing (Adema, 2001). All Nordic countries provide generous pension facilities to enable the old to live a life of dignity. Thus if the number of dependents increase, it becomes increasingly difficult to finance their pension out of the income of working population. It has been assumed that in the next 3 decades the old age dependency ration will increase from 0.25 to 0.40 in the Nordic countries. It is assumed that Denmark will suffer deterioration of finances up to 4% of GDP; it will be 6% of GDP for Norway and up to 4.5% of GDP for Sweden (Kvist & Greve, 2011). Clearly no country can suffer such an impact on its finances. It is often said that the problems of a welfare state can be circumvented by ensuring a high GDP growth. The Nordic countries should focus on increasing their GDP growth rate to mop up extra finances for their welfare schemes. In this section I will discuss the challenges of achieving high GDP growth for Nordic countries in this era of recession and globalisation. The Nordic countries have historically seen higher growth rates as compared to other European economies.
